MA COMPARATIVE EUROPEAN SOCIAL STUDIES

Course objective: This unique course is sited in Maastricht, validated by the London Metropolitan University and managed by the Hogeschool Zuyd. Its teaching team is drawn from a network of twenty-eight institutes of higher education in Europe. It provides student with an opportunity to study alongside others from throughout Europe and invites students to conduct a comparative study, researching the field of social professional practice and social policy within a European context. The course is designed to deepen students’ understanding of European institutions, policies and frameworks for studying comparative issues in the field of the social professions. MACESS co-operates with both the Council of Europe and the European Union. The course language is English.

Course structure: The course comprises six modules (4 core modules and 2 out of 5 optional modules) taught during the first half year plus a six month comparative research project to be undertaken in another European country, which will form the basis of the dissertation.

2. Comparative social research

3. Comparative social policy

4. Social professional practice in Europe

Optional modules:

5. Management of change in a European context

6. European network development and intercultural
    theories

7. Marginalisation and social exclusion in Europe

8. European welfare law

9. Political philosophy and European welfare

Dissertation:

A 20,000 word comparative study written in English and based on work undertaken during a six-month research period during the course. The dissertation is submitted in August.

Entry requirements: Students should have a BA or equivalent. Furthermore, they should have a professional qualification, which entitles them to practice in the social professions. Exceptionally, students not qualified but with appropriate experience and knowledge of the social professions will be accepted (particularly from countries where no such qualification exists). Finally, students are expected to demonstrate the ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing at an appropriate level at the beginning of the course.
